Leonard Bauman, the eldest of a family of eight children, was born May 11, 1854, and spent the early years of his life in Indiana and Illinois. At the age of fifteen he came to Iowa with his parents, living on a farm near Clarence, Cedar county.

On January 4th, 1877, he was married to Miss Mary Zaiser of Aurora, Ill. He continued farming near Clarence until the spring of 1885, when with is family he came to Ida county, having purchased a farm two and one-half miles south of Cushing, where he continued his occupation until 1903, when he retired from the farm and moved to Cushing. Here the remainder of his life was spent.

He was one of the pioners of Ida county, and had a part in the building up of this community. He was a member of the first board of trustees of the Cushing M. E. church, and took active part in the financing of building this, the first church in Cushing. Sixteen years ago, during a revival here, he was thoroughly converted and united with the church, of which he remained a member until his death, which occured at his home in Cushing, at ten o'clock Sunday morning April 14, 1918.

He was a charter member of the I.O.O.F. Cushing Valley lodge. He was also a member of the Woodman lodge of this place.

Mr. Baumann had been in failing health for several years, but his final illness dated from March 21st, when he was stricken with pneumonia. He rallied for a time, but other complications setting in, he was unable to overcome the disease.

He leaves a wife, four sons and two daughters: William and John of Cushing, Charles of Battle Creek, Fred of Jefferson, SD, Mrs. Leon Huges of LeMars, and Mrs. Avery Kent of Sioux City. These and one brother, John of Clarence, IA, and three sisters, Mrs. F.C. Oetting of Stanwood, IA, Mrs. Wm. Bachman and Miss Lydia Bauman of Clarence, IA, were all present at his bedside at the time of his death. Two brothers, George and Henry of Clarence, were unable to be present. He also leaves fourteen grandchildren. Besides these immediate relatives he leaves a large circle of friends who will mourn the departure of a good neighbor and citizen, and a loyal friend.
