Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, he was not officially declared by the military as being dead until April 1, 1945.

Herbert served as a Staff Sergeant & Right Gunner on B-29 "Calamity Jane" #42-24589, 25th Bomber Squadron, 40th Bomber Group, Very Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in McHenry County, Illinois prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on December 5, 1941, prior to the war, at Camp Grant, Illinois. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Farm Hand and also as Single, without dependents.

B-29 #42-24589 took off, with a crew of 12, from Chakulia Airfield, India on a combat mission over Singapore.

They are believed to have either been hit by ground anti-aircraft fire or attacked by a Japanese fighter plane. They are also believed to have crashed at sea southwest of Singapore.

Herbert was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash during the war.

He was awarded the "Distinguished Flying Cross", Air Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Purple Heart.

Herbert also has a "Cenotaph" in the Big Foot Cemetery, Harvard, Illinois.
