Robert G. Hacking was born to William Hacking and Ann Pearson Hacking in Holme or Burton in Kendal, Westmorland (now Cumbria), England. He immigrated with his mother and 6 siblings: Martha, Henry H., Ann, Elizabeth, William, and John, as well as the Pearson (Pierson) family. They sailed on the Rockall, which entered the port in New Orleans on 4 May 1849. The Hacking family settled in Cincinnati, Ohio before Robert came to St. Louis where he worked as a mail carrier for a newspaper and printing company.
Robert married Johanna C. W. Buechner on 23 December 1857 in St. Louis. They had four children: Martha or Mattie (Davis Fitzpatrick), William, Louisa Ann, and Henry H. Hacking. Louisa Ann died when she was 21 and is also buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery.
Robert was buried on 23 April 1913.
