Ann was the 5th child of William Hacking and Ann Pearson Hacking. She was born in Holme or Burton in Kendal, Westmorland, England, United Kingdom. The Birth Register for Jul/Aug/Sep 1838 has her listed as being born in Kendal, Westmorland, England and Ralphena Hacking has in her records that she was born 9 September 1838 in Burton in Kendal, Westmorland, England.

Ann appears on the 1841 England Census in Burton, Westmorland, England with her parents and siblings: William (40) school master, Ann (30) Martha (10), Henry (8), Robert (5), Ann (3), and Elizabeth (8 months). A brother, James, had been born 1836 and died in 1837. A sister Mary was born and died in 1843.

Ann immigrated with he mother and living siblings to the United States, arriving in New Orleans on 4 May 1849 on the Rockall. The family settled in Cincinnati. The Hacking family who were on the ship included Anne (39), Martha (17) Henry (15), Robert (12), Anne (10), Elizabeth (7), William (3), and John (Infant). They were also traveling with who appears to be a brother to Anne Pearson Hacking with his family, and their father Robert Pearson (Pierson).

1850 Census: Cincinnati Ward 11, Hamilton, Ohio Ann age (12) living with mother and siblings above, except William died.

1860 Census: Cincinnati Ward 11, Hamilton, Ohio Ann and her two living sisters were teachers, while their mother Ann was identified as a gentlewoman. All the women seemed to show a tendancy to hide their age. John was also living with them, but Henry and Robert had moved from the area.

1880 Census: Cincinnati Ward 11, Hamilton, Ohio Anna was boarding at the home of the Wells family, still working as a teacher, and still aging much slower than the rest of us--giving her age as 25--but actually being on the earth for 42 years.
