John was the 9th of nine children born to William Hacking and Ann Pearson Hacking in Burton in Kendal, Westmorland (now Cambria), England, United Kingdom. He was only a young babe when the living members of the family immigrated to the United States through the New Orleans Port in May 1849. Mother Ann brought her family on the Rockall in company of W. Euactson Pierson (35) School teacher; Agnes Pierson (28), Anne Pierson (15), Richard Pierson (5), Eliza Pierson (3), Agnes Pierson (infant), Robert Pierson (69) farmer, Anne Hacking (39), Martha Hacking (17 - 1st), Henry Hacking (15 -2nd), Robert Hacking (12 3rd) Anne Hacking (10 - 5th) Elizabeth Hacking (7 - 6th), William Hacking (3 - 8th), John Hacking (infant - 9th). Intended place to inhabit for all of the above is Ohio, USA. James (4th) and Mary (7th) both died as infants in England; and father William probably died before the family left England since he is not recorded with the family after this point.

During the 1850 United States census, the family had established themselves in Cincinnati. However, 4 year-old William died in August of 1850 of cholera. In 1862 Henry was killed in action at Turkey Bridge, Virginia.

John married Hester K. Butt 7 May 1874 and they had two children: Vinnie M. and Harry B. Hacking.

Siblings:
Martha Hacking Dexter
Henry H. Hacking
Robert G. Hacking
James Hacking
Ann Hacking
Elizabeth Hacking Judd
Mary Hacking
William Hacking
John Graham Hacking

Suggested edit: According to Woodland Cemetery, Dayton, Ohio, Hester's cremated remains were interred 25 Mar 1941 in Sec 106, Lot 2985 along with her husband's (John G) remains. Looks like daughter Vinnie had them both interred at the same time. Vinnie is buried in the same lot.
