The family immigrated to the United States in 1849 through New Orleans with their widowed mother Ann, daughters Martha, Ann, and Elizabeth; and sons Henry H., Robert G, William, and infant John Graham. They settled around the Cincinnati, Ohio where several of the family, including Martha became teachers. In December 1864 she married John C. Dexter. By the 1900 Census the couple was living in St. Louis along with her widowed sister Elizabeth Judd. They had no children.
One thing was very apparent was that the women in this family seemed to age slower than most women since census and vital records underestimate the year of the birth or age.
