John Preston Fant, 8th child of Edward Waldo and Sarah Caroline (Simmons) Fant of South Carolina, was born September 12, 1874 in Cass County, Texas. He died May 27, 1947 of a heart attack while attending the State Legislature in Austin, Texas. He was serving his second term as State Representative. He was known throughout East Texas. Served as Cass County Commissioner 4 years; Cass County Judge 8 years, State Representative 3 1/2 years, Mayor of Linden, Deacon in Baptist Church, Director Marion County Chamber of Commerce, and a Master Mason. For more than twenty years, he served as trustee for the College of Marshall. His children all attended that college. he was also a farmer, businessman, and owner of Fant Brother's cotton gin at Lodi, Texas.
John Preson married Rosa Lee Owen on November 18, 1900. They had six children: Gladys Gertrude, Owen Preston, Clyde Edward, Eunice Ada, Thelma Lucille and Ruth Rosaline.
