Cary Buckner Fant Sr., was the 11th child of Edward Waldo and Sarah Caroline Simmons Fant. He was born in Cass County Texas and was a large landowner, merchant and cotton ginner in Lanier-Linden area; deacon of the Baptist Church, trustee of Lanier school, Mason and an avid fox-hunter. he was an influential member of the community.

He married Mary Tallulah Burns of South Carolina on January 13, 1901. They had 10 children: Carl, James Morris, William Curtis, Pearl, Unnamed Daughter, Thomas Edward, Mary Lou, Alene, Lorene, and Cary Buckner Jr.
