Joris Verwolf was born in September 1825 in the country village Noordeloos in the southeastern part of the Dutch southwestern part of the Dutch southwestern province Zuid-Holland, son of the 50 years aged farmer Pieter Verwolf and Merigje den Hartog.

On 18 October 1836, when Joris was 11 years old, his father Pieter Verwolf, born in 1772 in Noordeloos and son of Joris Verwolf and Krijntje Houweling, died as farmer in Noordeloos at the age of 63 years.

Joris Verwolf married on 4 March 1848 in the riverdyke village Tienhoven, which lies on the south bank of the River Lek, one of the arms of the River Rhine, to the four years younger Leentje van Es, who was born in Tienhoven. In September 1848 and August 1850 their first two children, Pieter and Cornelis Johannis were born there. The next child, daughter Merrigje was born in November 1851 in Ameide, another riverdyke village, just southeast of Tienhoven. The sons Johannes, Arie, Bastiaan and Peter were also born in Ameide, from January 1854 until November 1859.
In the period November 1861 - May 1877 Joris was a cattle farmer, who lived with his family at Tiendweg 77, a country road that runs in northeastern direction to Ameide. Then they moved to Princegracht 28 B and on 4 May 1876 to Princegracht eastside 28 in Ameide, where his wife Leentje van Es died in November 1877. In the period 1880-1900 he was a merchant, living with his son Arie's family in Ameide, Princegracht 42, 153 and 154, but moved on a not mentioned date in that period alone to Achterweg 148 B. On 21 March 1894 he returned as a labourer from Tienhoven to his son Arie's home, where he died at the end of 1896 at the age of 71 years. It's told in the family that Joris and his wife Leentje were buried in an unmarked grave (a clue to their poverty?) at the Oude Begraafplaats (Old Cemetery) of Ameide. Nowadays there is not any grave of a Verwolf in that cemetery (anymore). Since 1975 burials in Ameide take place in the Nieuwe Begraafplaats (New Cemetery). In October 2012 there were five Verwolf graves in this cemetery, all descendants of Joris' son Arie.

His sons Pieter (Peter) and Johannes (John) emigrated in 1882 to the USA, Peter to South Dakota, and John first to Iowa, then to South Dakota and as last to Montana. Joris' son Arie stayed in Ameide and created there his Verwolf family. Joris' son Cornelis Johannis (Kees) Verwolf died at the end of 1888 in Ameide at the age of 38 years, unmarried.

In the USA Joris was called George by his relatives.
