Dave was born in Madison County, Arkansas to John Bruton Carpenter and Samantha Short. He married Sarah Mattie Burk (sister to his brother Tommy's wife) April 18, 1909. They had six children; Estus Clinton, Oral Ernest (Scott), Charles Edith Geren, Gladys Rheua Harper, Sidney Raymond, and Lee Vaughn Carpenter. Dave was a coal miner and farmer for most of his life. He died of cancer at 86 years of age. He lies in eternal rest at the side of his Mattie in Floral Haven Memorial Gardens, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.
