John Meese Dies After Long Illness

John T. Meese, 80, of Ord died December 12, 1976 at the Valley County Hospital after a lingering illness. Mr. Meese was born June 17, 1896 in Geranium Township, Valley County to John Cyrus and Minnie Waldmann Meese. His early life was spent on a farm west of Ord with his parents where he attended rural school, later attending the Ord High School. John enlisted in the Army during World War I, August 15, 1918 at Ord, and was honorable discharged on January 15, 1919.

He was united in marriage to Velma A. Cronk on February 23, 1922 at Ord. They made their home on a farm east of Ord until 1952 when they moved into town. John continued to farm until about 1960 when he retired. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was a former member of the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Velma of Ord; daughters, Charlotte Meese of Ord, Mrs. Adeline Absalon of Falls Church, VA and Mrs. Mildred Christoffersen of Ft. Pierce, FL; sons, Ray and William of Ord; 19 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; sisters, Mrs. Bertha Edwards of North Loup, Mrs. Hilda Kasson of St. Paul, and Mrs. Rosalie Heinze of Brighton, MI.

John was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 15, at 10 am at the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Ord. Burial was in the Ord Catholic Cemetery with Military rites by the Ord American Legion and VFW posts.
