Georgia Governor, US Senator, Presidential Cabinet Secretary. He served as Secretary of the Interior in the second administration of President Grover Cleveland. He served as Governor of Georgia from 1907 to 1909 and from 1911 to 1913, and as a Senator from Georgia in the United States Senate from 1913 to 1921. He held progressive views, except where progress for blacks was concerned.
