George Cuban Bennett was the sixth-born child of Robert and Cecilia Cuban Bennett, named after his maternal grandfather, George Cowban. He was born in Lancashire, England in 1819.

Deciding that opportunity was greater in America, George's parents along with George and his brothers and sisters (William, John, Ellen, Elizabeth, and Mary) started for America in 1819 on a small sailing ship. George was a mere 6 weeks old.

After nine long weeks, the family arrived in Baltimore. They then sailed down the Ohio River hoping to reach Illinois but landed in Gallia County, Ohio when some of the family became sick. They rented a farm, had money enough to buy a cow, and remained there seven years. George's brothers, Robert and Richard, were born there, and sisters, Elizabeth and Mary, died in that place.

George's parents then moved the family north to Perry County, Ohio to be near the Catholic church at Somerset. His brother Thomas and sister Elizabeth (the second) were born in Perry County, making a family of ten children. After living on various farms in the area, the family finally settled in Pleasant Township.

George Bennett married Anne Carroll and raised a family of eleven children; Thomas, John, Margaret, Cecilia, Mary Ellen, Philip, Albert, Josephine, Caroline, William, and George.

George died in 1867 at the age of 48 years. A family story relates that he attended New Years services at St. Francis church at Chapel Hill, fell ill after returning home, and died three days later.

His middle name was changed at some point. His mother's maiden name was "Cowban", also spelled "Couban", which eventually led to "Cuban".
