Her parents, along with his six older brothers and sisters (William, John, Ellen, Elizabeth, Mary, and George) emigrated from Lancashire, England to the United States in 1819 on a small sailing ship.

Elizabeth's brothers, Robert and Richard, were born there, and her sisters, Elizabeth (the first) and Mary, died there.
Elizabeth's' parents then moved the family north to Perry County, Ohio to be near the Catholic church at Somerset. Elizabeth was born in Perry County in 1828, with her brother, Thomas, born 2 years earlier, making a family of ten children. After living on various farms in the area, the family finally settled in Pleasant Township.
Elizabeth married Hugh Mooney in 1848 in Perry County. Together they had a family of nine children: Daniel, James, Ella, Robert, and five more names unknown.

Her funeral service was held at St. Bernard church, Corning, Ohio with internment in Chapel Hill cemetery.
