Ellen Bennett Saunders was the third-born child of Robert and Cecilia Cuban Bennett. She was born in Lancashire, England in 1812 and lived there until 1819. Deciding that opportunity was greater in America, Ellen's parents along with Ellen and her brothers and sisters (William, John, Elizabeth, Mary, and George) started for America in 1819 on a small sailing ship.

After nine long weeks, the family arrived in Baltimore. They then sailed down the Ohio River hoping to reach Illinois but landed in Gallia County, Ohio when some of the family became sick. They rented a farm, had money enough to buy a cow, and remained there seven years. Ellen's brothers, Robert and Richard, were born there, and sisters, Elizabeth and Mary, died in that place.

Ellen's parents then moved the family north to Perry County, Ohio to be near the Catholic church at Somerset. Her brother Thomas and sister Elizabeth (the second) were born in Perry County, making a family of ten children. After living on various farms in the area, the family finally settled in Pleasant Township.

Ellen Bennett married George Saunders and raised a family of eight children; Mary, Robert, Thomas, Cecely, Frances, Sarah, Eugenie, and George. Ellen died in 1892 at the age of 80 years.
