Mr. McCachren, age 94, of South Knoxville, TN and formerly of Charlotte, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 26, 2004 at UT Hospital. Retired from S & W Cafeteria after 40 years of faithful service. He was a member of St. James Episcopal Church. Mr. McCachren was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corps having served during World War II in England, Belgium and the United States. Mr. McCachren was considered as one of the famed 'Four Captain McCachrens' at the University of North Carolina where he was a 1934 graduate and was inducted into the Southern Conference Basketball Hall of Fame.
He was preceded in death by wife, Myrtle Whittle McCachren, and eight brothers and sisters. He is survived by daughter, Teresa Watlington and husband, Sam; grandchildren, Misty Cooper and husband, Kevin of Augusta, Georgia, Robert Watlington and wife, Kristy of Knoxville; great-grandchildren, Corey, Camryn, Micah, Mason and Benjamin; brother, Jim McCachren; sister, Betty Blair Huey of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina; brother, George McCachren of Charlotte, North Carolina; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held on Sunday, May 30, 2004 at Berry Funeral Home in Knoxville, Tennessee.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hematology Oncology Parent Patient, c/o Children's Hospital, PO Box 15010, Knoxville, Tennessee 37901 in memory of David D. McCachren.
