RALEIGH, NC -- William Henry McCachren, "Mr. Mac" was born November 9, 1915 in Charlotte, NC, died Wednesday night at his home. A graduate of UNC Chapel Hill, Mac was captain of the basketball team, swam and threw discus on the track team. After graduation he taught at Oak Ridge Military Institute, until joining the U.S. Navy during World War II, where he became a Lt. Commander. Following his active military service, he joined the Naval Reserve and went to work for the Veteran's Administration in Fay- etteville. While there he was Jaycee of the Year, and met and married Edna Earle Williams. He trans- ferred with the VA to Mountain Home in Johnson City, TN where he was also president of the Rotary. In 1963 he became the State Director for Selective Service for North Carolina and was vice president of the Raleigh Rotary Club. A lifetime of service to others included the YMCA and the Boy Scouts of America, where he was awarded the Silver Beaver and the Vigil Honor of the Order of the Arrow.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Edna Earle McCachren; son, Jonathan Marcus McCachren; grandchildren, James Patrick McCachren, Elisabeth Ashley McCa- chren, William Thomas McCachren, Jonathan Ross McCachren, broth- ers, James Roland McCachren, Da- vid Downs McCachren, George Ennis McCachren; and sister, Betty Blair Huey.

He was preceded in death by his son, William Henry McCachren, Jr. 43, and a brother Jonathan Edward McCachren 98.
Funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in Raleigh by Reverend Dr. Edwin Stock. Burial will follow in Raleigh Memorial Park.
