Bert was of stouter build than his brothers. As a child he was sickly and this plagued him through his young manhood. When he tried to join his brothers in working for the railroad, his illness forced him to quit. But he did so well with the molasses mill he became noted all over the country as being the finest in sorghum making. While convalescing from a long illness in 1883 he met Sarah Jane Starkey and they were married in 1884. For a time they farmed at Hooper. Joseph Lee, when he returned from Idaho in 1886 lived for several months with Bert and Sarah Jane. In 1887 with their few belongings in their wagon and with fruit trees, current and gooseberry starts, they joined the Simmons and Taylor families in Willow Creek (where as before stated) he became the first bishop. His life was along one of service to church and community.
