George Simmons has been described as being the back bone of Mary's family. He was a good provider, a good home builder, a good father and a good farmer. One said of him that he builded his houses and barns as well as he builded his character.By nature he was jolly had had a droll humor. His schooling had been cut short because of the need even as a child to help support his mother's family. The bishop in speaking at his funeral said, "I have heard Presidents of the church, Apostles, Presidents of Stakes and many others, but never have I heard a man stand before and audience and speak with more humility that Brother George." He married Sara Jane Coles in 1887 and of their nine children, five died in infancy.
