TEXT OF OBITUARY: (August 12, 1972)
Wofford Professor, Dr. John Hill, Dies
Dr. John Quitman Hill, 52, John M. Reeves professor of mathematics at Wofford College, of 706 Hollywood St., died Friday morning in General Hospital after a long illness.
A native of Cherokee County; son of the late Thomas William and Zoar (sic) Brown Hill; veteran of World War II; graduate of Wofford College and Oxford University in England; member of Phi Beta Kappa Chapter at Wofford; recipient of the 1947 Rhodes Scholarship at Oxford; recipient of the Distinguished Teacher Award at Wofford; served on the Board of Family Services; veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, discharged in 1945.
After graduating from Oxford, Dr. Hill became a member of the mathematics department at the University of Tennessee. He also served as professor of mathematics at Converse College prior to joining the Wofford College faculty in 1953 where he has held the position of John M. Reeves professor of mathematics and chairman of the department since 1958.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Bonnie Lee Hilliard Hill; Daughter, Mrs. Donald Lee Elliott of Spartanburg; sister, Mrs. Nellie Wills (sic) of Gaffney; brothers, William Jay of Greer and the Rev. Jesse Hill of Florence; three grandchildren.
Services 3 today at Fernwood Baptist Church by Dr. W. L. Ball and the Rev. Howard Wilson; burial in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
Body in church at 2:30.
Pallbearers: Curtis Bell, Philip Covington, John Harrington, William Hubbard, Howard Pegram, Richard Robinson, James Turner and William Cavin.
