Arlene Lois Young Austin died October 12, 1998 in Houston following a lengthy illness from cancer.

Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church, Houston and also on Friday October 16, 1998, at the First Baptist Church, Wellington. Burial was in South Fairview
Cemetery.

Born July 21. 1925 to Marie Miller Young and Robert Jason Young in Davenport, Iowa, her mother returned to the Wellington area with Arlene being only a few weeks old. Arlene spent many of her early years in Lutie where her family owned and operated a community store.

Many fond memories were passed on to family members from her experiences of those times. Only recently she recalled to a grandchild of the time when she was helping her father at the store and a man and woman stopped for gasoline. About four years old, she was cleaning the windows of the car as she glanced into the back seat and noticed it was filled with guns, She recalled how "her eyes grew to the size of saucers." The customers, Bonnie and Clyde, soon paid for their gas and were on their way.

From an early age. Arlene was involved with her church and school activities. She graduated from Samnorwood High School in 1942.

On September 9, 1942, she was married to Tommy Lee Austin, by Rev J P Neil, pastor of the First Baptist Church, Wellington. For 56 years she was a pastor's wife, raising three children and at the age of 47, she graduated from Howard Payne University with her degree in education.

Always a pastor's wife at heart, she helped lead in Sunday School, W M U Training Union and all aspects of church life. But music was her greatest "love." She would teach piano to anyone who wanted to learn. She spent endless hours with choirs and singing groups. She played the piano and organ in the many churches where they served. She also served the Southern Baptist Home Mission Board in Michigan and California.

Arlene was a retired school teacher having taught in private schools. Willis Independent School District, Aldinc Independent School District, Houston Independent School District and Harris County Adult Education. She had an impact on the lives of her students.

Additionally she was always looking for a business challenge which led her to founding, owning and operating The Bayshore Welcome Service, La Porte; Gateway travel in Lancaster, CA and Airline Health Foods, Houston.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers. Buford John Young and Orville Adolph Young.

Survivors include her husband, Tommy Lee Austin; three children: Sandra Lois Hendon and her husband Gerald, of Houston; Timothy B Austin and his wife, Donna, of Marlow, OK; and Steven Mark Austin and his wife, Vangie, of Houston; a sister, Katie Beene; a brother, Robert Jason Young and seven grandchildren, Austin Dennis Hendon, Autumn Lois Hendon, Liesela Kay Austin. John Ashley Austin, Catherine Zoe Austin, George Thomas Austin and Michelle Lea Austin of Wellington by Rev J P Neil, pastor of the First Baptist Church.
