After a youth revival in Samnorwood at the skating rink, he was smitten by a beautiful young lady and married Arlene Lois Young on Sept. 5, 1942.
He grew up in Collingsworth County and in the field, at the age of 9, was called by the LORD to fulltime ministry as a preacher but was not baptized untill the age of 11 in a tank in Rolla, Tx.
He graduated from Wellington High School in the class of 1940. Tommy excelled in track lettering at WHS where he later taught and coached. He graduated from Howard Payne University, class of 1944, in Brownwood, Texas, where he was on the track team for 4 yrs., lettering.
He graduated from the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, class of 1952 in Ft. Worth, Texas. He was licensed as a Southern Baptist minister in 1941 and ordained in 1942 at the First Baptist Church in Wellington. He spent the next 57 years in fulltime service to the LORD as pastor and missionary.
He is survived by his sister, ZoDell Smith and husband Donald R. of Mission, Texas; his three children, Sandra Lois Hendon and husband Gearld of Houston, Tx, son Timothy B. Austin and wife Cherie of Lawton, Okla., and son Steven M. Austin and wife Vangie of Houston, Tx; eight grandchildren.
Graveside service and interment will be held at 10:30 a.m. in Wellington, Tx., Aug. 28, 2010 at South Fairview Cemetery. A memorial service is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Sept. 4, 2010 at Houston's First Baptist Church.
