Queen of Sweden and Norway. A member of the Orange-Nassau Dynasty, she was the elder daughter of Prince Frederick of the Netherlands and Louise, a Hohenzollern princess of Prussia. In 1850 she married Crown Prince Carl of Sweden and Norway, later king Carl XV of Sweden and Carl IV of Norway. As his consort she was also Duchess of Scania. In 1860 she was crowned Queen, first in Stockholm and then in Trondheim. She gave birth to 2 children. Prince Carl Oscar died in infancy, creating great sorrow, whereas their daughter Louise eventually became a queen when she married the future King Frederik VIII of Denmark. The queen consort of Carl XV was considered a woman of the people at heart and was a committed patron of the poor, thus she was loved by the peoples of Sweden and Norway. Her unassuming and retiring manner, especially in contrast to her much more outgoing husband, made Queen Louise almost a shadow figure to him. A children's hospital she sponsored in 1860 in central Stockholm, Crown Princess Lovisa's, existed as a separate institution until 1970 when it was included in St. Göran's Hospital. King Carl, who was known for many extramarital flings, did however mourn his queen greatly when she died, a year before he passed on himself and was succeeded by his brother King Oscar II of Sweden and Norway.
