Earl Maurice Brooks

Earl Maurice Brooks, 87, of Nampa, passed away peacefully at a local care center on Wednesday April 9, 2003.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, April 14, at Alsip & Persons Funeral Chapel, Nampa. Personnel from the U.S. Marine Corps well provide military honors. Friends may call Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. at Alsip & Persons Funeral Chapel.

Earl was born June 1, 1915, in Winfield, Kan., the youngest of 10 children born to Thomas Jasper and Janie Brooks. After growing up on the farm and graduating from high school Earl attended the University of Nevada at Reno, where he earned a degree in agriculture. During his college years, Earl played football, both offense and defense, and was president of the Letterman's Club his senior year. After a memorable homecoming game against Fresno State, Earl was selected by sportswriters to receive Sen. Pat McCarran's sweater as Nevada's outstanding player of the game.

On Sept. 25, 1941, Earl married Zoe Bestick in Ruby Valley, Nev. They had four children Bruce, Becky, Bill and Mary. In 1942, Earl enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served his country until 1946, having spent much of his time in the South Pacific.

Earl enjoyed a career in wild-life management with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, serving at game refuges in Nevada, Washington, California and Idaho. He retired in 1973 as the refuge manager at Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge. After retirement, Earl and Zoe enjoyed spending time with many wonderful friends, trips to Mexico and Arizona, golfing and time with their family.

Earl is survived by his four children, Bruce and his wife, Joanne Brooks of Sandy, Utah, Becky Papike of Princeton, Minn., Bill and his wife, Sharon Brooks of Nampa, and Mary and her husband, Larry Silverthom of Seal Rock, Ore.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Zoe, his parents, nine brothers and sisters; and a great-grandson, Zackary Jordan.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Nampa Care Center who gave so much love and attention to their father during his illness.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Candle-lighters for Childhood Cancer, 328 West 200 South, Suite #100, Salt Lake City, UT 84101.
