-LAST RITES HELD FOR MRS. CATHARINE GOULD-
The village and surrounding community were saddened on Monday Jan. 30th, when the news was sent around that one of our oldest pioneer resident, Mrs. Catharine Gould, had passed away at her home here.

Funeral services were conducted on Thursday, Feb 2, at 10 o'clock at the home and 10:30 at the M. E. church, Rev. E. P. Stone officiating. Burial was made in Graceland cemetery. The deceased, who had voiced her dislike for the thought to rapid carrying of her coffin by a mechanical vehicle, had asked that hers be transported in the old-fashioned way. Accordingly, a horse-drawn hearse, belonging to O. T. Saether and Son funeral directors, which had not been in use for fifteen years, was brought out for use at the funeral services.

Pall bearers were Frank Meade, Carl Chandler, Arne Olson, Henry Hendrickson, Christopher Blake, O. C. Broughton.

Catharine Elizabeth Mill was born Dec. 16, 1850, at Santa Fe, New Mexico, at the time of the Mexican war, of the parents Mr. and Mrs. Henry E. Mill. Her father was a soldier, and her mother went with him during the battles and did the cooking and washing for the general. Catharine's birth, we might state, occurred right on the battlefield, and during the first two years of her life she accompanied her parents in the regiment during the Mexican was and Indian up-rising. Her early childhood was, therefore, one fraught with hardships and dangers. After the Indian uprisings had subsided in the Southwest, she came with her parents to Wisconsin, where they settled on what is now the Ole Alfred farm hear Blanchardville. Later, in about the year 1870, they moved to the village of Blanchardville where they managed a hotel. On May 23, 1874, Catharine was united in marriage to Mr. Marcy Linus Gould. Later they moved into the home on the north side of the river where Mrs. Gould has lived continuously for 57 years.

Ten children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Gould, three of whom preceded her in death. Her husband passed away 15 years ago. She leaves to mourn her demise, seven children: Mrs. Margaret Amerpohl, Blanchardville, George Gould, Angus; Mrs. Cora Striebel, Rhinelander; Ned Gould of Milwaukee; Mrs. Rose Ryan, Mineral Point; Walter Gould, Blanchardville; Linus Gould, Green Bay. Twenty-two grandchildren and ten great grandchildren also survive.

The deceased was a very highly respected resident of this community and was greatly loved by her family and friends. The floral tributes were many and beautiful at her funeral on Thursday. Her passing will be greatly missed by the family; and it leaves a vacancy in the community that can never again be filled – that of one of Blanchardville's early pioneer residents.
