Ila A. Child, 84 years old, a longtime Quincy resident passed away on Saturday, May 25, 1996, with all her children and their spouses gathered about her at Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee following a stroke.
She was born Ila Adams on September 16, 1911, to George and May Ann (Green) Adams at Layton, Davis County, Utah. She attended elementary school in Layton and graduated from Davis High School. She also graduated from LDS Seminary.
Ila married Arvel Lester Child on March 12, 1930, in the Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They lived in Clinton, Utah, until early 1940 when they moved to Vale, Ore. In 1942, they moved to Nyssa, Ore., where they purchased a farm and became very active in that community.
The family moved to Quincy in 1961 where they purchased a farm and built a home. From 1974 to 1977 she went with her husband to Ireland where he served as Mission President for the LDS Church until 1976, and was then called to the London Temple where he was an assistant to the President, and Ila was an ordinance worker. When the Temple in Seattle opened in 1980, she and her husband moved to Seattle and worked full-time for two years. They returned to their home in Quincy but worked at the Seattle Temple on a limited basis for six more years.
Mrs. Child faithfully supported her husband in many community and church positions. She served as counselor in Primary and Relief Society, and as teacher in Sunday School, Primary and Relief Society. She loved music and served as chorister for many years. Mrs. Child also served on Stake Relief Society Boards.
She was preceded in death by her husband in November, 1987. She remained in Quincy until her death.
Mrs. Child was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints First Ward in Quincy. She is survived by her children: Val and wife Marion Child of Caldwell, Idaho; Nani and husband Spencer Beus of Grand View, Idaho; Keith and wife Kathy Child, of Quincy; Ardean and wife Julieanne Child, of Quincy; Reed and wife Paul Child of Quincy; Lynn and wife Janice Child of Quincy; Gary and wife Julie Child of Post Falls, Idaho; 42 grandchildren and 49 great-grandchildren; brothers Waynard Adams, Darold Adams, Harold Adams and Max Adams all of Utah; sisters Mary Steed and Dorathea Fowler, both of Utah.
She was also preceded in death by her parents and six brothers and sisters.
Scharbach's Columbia Funeral Chapel in Quincy is in charge of arrangements.
