In 1914, on June 8 in Everson, John was the fourth son born to "Nellie" Konneker and Tom Braithwaite. After him, they had one more son and two daughters.

In 1918, on December 5, around 11 a.m., his 2 and not quite a half year old brother Frederick caught on fire from the stove. Fred passed away the following day from the shock. John was only four and a half.

John ran a small dairy farm in Ferndale, and owned working shares in several Plywood mills.

John would at times go on prospecting trips to visit the mine his father found. It was the Boundary Red Mountain Gold Mine ledge, located just south of the border on the north slope of Red Mountain. It was to prove the second richest free-milling gold mine in the Mt. Baker District. The family lost control of the mine.

John m. in 1937, he and Joyce had six children; Alfred, Wilfred, Mary Vivian, Edwin, Gilbert and Donald (who died young).

In 1993, Joyce died. Grandpa John was so talkative then, I asked what happened. He said, "When Joyce was alive, she did all the talking for me."

In 1997 John remarried, to Chris Catino. They moved to the mid-west. He died there. Actual burial here. A memorial service and stone were established near Ferndale, and the home farm he bought in 1925.
