Men are as varied in personalities and characteristics as they are in physical make-up. All have our small, or great faults, all have talents toward some form or godliness.
Some seem conceived on a more generous plan than others, but who can tell what part environment or heredity plays?
In maturity we take our place in the community which is ours and take our part in the plan of life. How well we act our role, or do our part is up to each individual for we are free agents to make or belittle the part it falls to us to play. Each day gives us opportunity to add to this act, something which will add stone by stone to the building of character.
And so act by act, week by week through the casual run of our days we build for ourselves the most living of all monuments - the monument erected in the hearts of those around us.
What towering cenograph of marble or bronze can compare to the tear of a friendless one, befriended? Or the gratitude of the forlorn?
What sweep to fame at the head of glittering armies can compare to the quiet of every one's act of the honest man seeking his daily bread by the sweat of his brow?
Not harassed or harassing but justly enjoying the homely virtues which are his endowment.
The man diligent in business generally acquires a quota of this world's good, which man makes life worth the living for himself, and through his generosity, for others as well.
And the man built on a generous mould can never withhold where he sees a need. And the man with the foundation of honor and integrity will never sacrifice these for the sake of dishonest gains.
Such men are the bulwark of a community, and such a man this community mourns, a loss at the passing of Samuel Clifton Talley on Sunday afternoon, December 8th, at his home in West End.
For more than quarter of a century he had been the axis around which revolved the affairs of his home and his manifold business interests.
In this loved surroundings he played his part well, planned and formed and executed but not for self alone.
His part was that of the loving husband, the good neighbor, the loyal friend. Those who came asking were not denied. His church was also the recipient of his generosity, and the community was rewarded with his splendid citizenship.
And so from off the stage of life passes a man, worthy of the name for "an honest man is the noblest word of God."
On Monday afternoon at 2:30 his body was taken to the Methodist church of which he was a loyal member, where due tribute was paid before its interment for his long, long sleep in LaFayette's beautiful West View Cemetery.
