His parents were Moses and Eliza (Chaffin) Thurston. His brothers were Lyman, George and James and he had two sisters, Matilda and Mary. Alvin helped support his mother and two sisters by farming when the war came and his two older brothers, Lyman and George had joined the army. By 1870 he was in Worcester, MA. working as a carpenter and living with his brother, Lyman. He remained in Worcester the rest of his life. Alvin was the last surviving member of the Thurston family when he died in 1914. He never married.

ALVIN E. THURSTON DIES OF ARTERIO SCLEROSIS AT CITY HOSPITAL.

Alvin E. Thurston, formerly of Holden, died in city hospital, yesterday afternoon, shortly after admission for arterio sclerosis. He was 66 years, 11 months and 16 days old. His home was at 5 Kilby street.
Mr. Thurston was born in New Hampshire*(sic), son of Moses and Eliza (Chaffin) Thurston. The body was taken in charge by George Sessions Sons Co., to be prepared for burial.
The funeral will be from the Congregational Church in Holden, at 2 o'clock, tomorrow afternoon. Burial will be in Holden.

*He wasn't born in New Hampshire. He was born in Holden and his name is listed in the Holden Vital Birth Records.
