Civil War Service Record: A farmer from Holden, Massachusetts he enlisted as a private on 7 Dec 1863 at the age of 20.
Enlisted in Company B, 57th Infantry Regiment Massachusetts on 4 Jan 1864.
Died from wounds on 3 Jun 1864 at Washington, D.C.
Height: 5'10", Eye color: Blue, Hair color: Dark, Complexion: Light

Private George Washington Thurston was 21 years old and wounded on the second day of The Battle of the Wilderness. It was his first and last battle. He was taken to an area Washington, D.C. hospital where he later died. He is buried in the oldest section of Arlington National Cemetery in Section 27, Grave 846.

In his hometown of Holden, Massachusetts a government headstone for George was also placed in Grove Cemetery in the Thurston-Flagg Family Lot. His name also appears on Sacrifice. Panel 4 of the memorial tablets at the Holden Town Hall along with 29 others who gave their life for their country.

His parents were Moses and Eliza (Chaffin) Flagg Thurston.
Brother of Lyman, Alvin, Matilda, James and Mary Thurston.

While his older brother Lyman joined the army in 1861 (Co. G, 21st Mass., FAG #90417723), George stayed behind and worked as a farmhand to help his widow mother and his younger siblings, Alvin, Matilda (my great grandmother) and Mary. He then joined the army in 1863 when Alvin was older and able to take over. 1864 would prove to be a sad year for his mother Eliza. Not only did she lose George in May but her youngest daughter, Mary, fell sick and died in October.

My sincerest thanks to a wonderful FIND A GRAVE volunteer, Mary, (47866465), who gave so much of her time to photograph the Thurston-Flagg Family Lot and George's headstone. She also took pictures of the Town Hall and the Memorial Tablets. All of the buildings were there when the Thurston family lived in Holden. So take a picture stroll through Grove cemetery and into Holden, Massachusetts of bygone days. Mary, kindly gave me her permission to use her photographs.

This memorial to George Thurston will be marked as a cenotaph. There is a memorial for him on FIND A GRAVE (#16896220) for the Arlington National Cemetery where he's buried. You can also see a picture of his headstone in Arlington on this memorial. My brother, nephew and niece have all visited his gravesite.
