News Of The Passing Of Mr. Joseph Roettgerman* Caused Surprise
_____________________________________________________________
* Note Roetgerman, as spelled on the grave, is alternately spelled as Roetgermann, Roettgermann, Roettgerman, Roetgermann, and Roetgerman

On Monday afternoon, at about four o'clock, Mr. Joseph Roettgerman passed away at his home a short distance Northeast of Minster, from the effects of a heart attack. He was ill only a few hours and had arrived at his home after a trip to and from Minster less than one hour previous to his death. He expired without a struggle and while Mrs. Roettgerman (Philomena Sextro) was giving him attention in his bed chamber. Immediately the announcement of his passing was broadcast throughout the locality and the tidings caused a surprise in all circles.

Mr. Roettgerman was 49 years of age and and he seemed to be strong and healthy. He had been moving about among the people with his usual vigor and he gave no outward signs of physical distress. On Monday morning he worked in the hay filed at his farm, although he said to others in the home that he was not felling as well as usual. During the early hours of the afternoon he came to Minster and consulted a physician and then returned to his home. (I'm guessing that he didn't get the best advice at the doctor's appointment that day...)

After he had alighted from his car he went into the house and then sought his bed, at the same time declaring that he had "Never felt so bad in his life." When he had laid down Mrs. Roettgerman gave him medicine that had been procured from the physician and almost immediately thereafter he breathed his last. The end came so unexpectedly for the persons of the Roettgerman household that they could scarcely realize the stern fact.

Mr. Roettgerman had been a strong man during his life and had assumed the leadership in the affairs of the household. His parents, who are Mr. an Mrs. Herman Roettgerman, lived at the farm home that was occupied by the deceased and his family and the place has been owned by these people for many years. The family has been included in the membership of St. Augustine Catholic parish and its members have taken part in local affairs.

The subject of this narrative was born on February 25, 1881, and while his parents were living at the home north east of this city. He was continuously associated with the farm life while he grew to young manhood and in is mature years followed in that line of action. He was an ambitious person and achieved many successes in his particular calling.

On June 23, 1914, he was united in marriage to Miss Philomena Sextro at the St. Augustine church in the village and they established their home with the groom's parents. Mrs. Roettgerman and the following children survive: Two daughters who are Mary and Jeanetta and one son who is Robert Roettgerman. Other living near relatives are his parents and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. John Fortman, Frank and Ben Roettgerman who reside in this community; Mrs. Henry Albers who lives inat Mria Stein; Mrs. Henry Otte who lives at Montezuma; Miss Bernadine Roettgerman who lives at Dayton.

He was a member of St. Augustine church and was also identified with the St. Augustine orphan's society.

The funeral was announced for Friday morning at the Minster church and the interment was to be made at the local cemetery. Revered Sixtus Meyer, C. PP.S., will read the mass.
