Mildred grew up on a wheat farm in Yukon, Oklahoma, her sweetness and love of the outdoors are some of the fond memories shared by her daughters Stella, Frances and Jannetta. Mildred married Roy Lee Ward on 09-03-1924, a drifter, who along with his parents and siblings helped harvest the wheat at Mildred's parents farm. Three children were born of this union; Stella Mae, Frances Louise and Jannetta Lorraine. Marital issues arose and that combined with the depression and the dust bowl issues experienced during that time led Roy and his family along with his three young daughters to leave Oklahoma and head towards California where promises of a better life, and better opportunities awaited them. Roy left the farm in Yukon and also left behind Mildred, the mother of his three little daughters. The daughters never again had any contact with their mother, and Mildred emotionally and mentally distraught was eventually institutionalized by her family where she remained until her death.
