CLAIR J. STANLEY

Clair Stanley, resident of Grant Township died April 4, at the Clare Nursing Home after an illness of six months at the age of 89.

He was born near Waterbury, South Dakota January 16, 1886 to Herbert Eugene and Carrie Electa Stanley.

He came to Michigan at the age of four and had been a resident of Clare and vicinity until his death, except for a short season in the lumbering industry in Trenary and Rapid River in the upper peninsula of Michigan in 1904.

He was united in marriage to Mabel Edith Myers on December 26, 1908, who preceeded him in death on February 7, 1965.

Surviving are 4 sons Otis of Lansing, Leon and Leonard of Clare and Floyd who has made his home at the farm in Farwell, since 1965, 10 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, 2 sisters, Mrs. Lucina Hampton of Harrison, Mrs. Rose Holmes, of Lansing, 2 brothers, James W. of Ovid and Maxwell of Harrison, numerous nieces and nephews. Two sisters, Jennie Tooley and Fern Ambrosier and one brother Russell preceeded him in death.

He was a farm; very active in the affairs of his community. He served on the school board at the Wilson School, Isabella County in the early 1920's; served as Surrey Township Supervisor in 1920 and 1921.

Clair and his wife served eleven years as Superintendent and matron at the Clare County Infirmary in Harrison from 1932 to 1943.

They returned to the farm they purchased in Grant Township where on May 7, 1945 Clair was appointed Supervisor for the Township, a post he held until April 1957 when he became Township Treasurer. He served as treasurer until November 1966.

He was a member of the Pamona Grange, Isabella County and a life member of the John Q Look Lodge No. 404 F. and A.M.

Funeral services were held Monday, April 7 at 2 p.m. from the Stephenson-Doherty Funeral Home with Rev. William Martin and Rev. Donald Roberts officiating. Burial was in Cherry Grove Cemetery.
