Valentine Chapman Stanley was the son of William Stanley and Rachel Chapman.

He married Rebecca Mingus, daughter of Luther Mingus and Elizabeth Lewis, on 22 Mar 1835 in Ames Twp., Athens Co., OH.

They had at least nine children, all born in OH:

  • Lavinia Stanley McGee (1836-1911) m. John F. McGee
  • John Morgan Stanley (1839-1923) m. Ann Wilson/Casy; Hester Ann Van Valkenburg
  • Elizabeth Jane Stanley Kasler (1840-1907) m. Joseph S. Kasler
  • Mary Ann Stanley Crook (1842-1922) m. Simon P. Crook
  • James Luther Stanley (1843-1932) m. Angeline Horton
  • Alvira Ann Stanley Posey (1845-1881) m. William Harrison Posey
  • Durinda Ellen Stanley Worden McNutt (1846-1904) m. Alexander Worden; Henry John McNutt
  • William Hammond Stanley (1848-1920) m. Martha Crawford
  • Francis Gideon "Frank" Standley (1852-1913) m. Samantha Phillips; Sarah Jane England

Rebecca died between 1852-1856, and Valentine married Catherine Jones, daughter of Benjamin Jones, Sr. and Leanna White Hersham/Harshman, on 24 Feb 1856 in Morgan Co., OH. They had no known children.

Valentine died sometime between 1900-1910, and Catherine died sometime between 1880-1900. Since the grave marker only says "VC Stanley and wife" we don't know if he's buried with wife #1 (Rebecca Mingus) or wife #2 (Catherine Jones) - but I suspect it's Catherine Jones.

More info about Valentine's parents and siblings:

William Stanley was born about 1775 in Berkeley Co., VA, and died 26 Dec 1845 in OH (probably Athens or Morgan Co.). His parents were William and Ann Stanley.

Rachel Chapman was born in 1791 in Frederick Co., VA, and died between 1840-1850 in OH (probably Athens or Morgan Co.). Her parents were Valentine and Ruth (Stevens/Stephens) Chapman.

William and Rachel were married on 17 Sep 1807 in Harrison Co., VA.

During the War of 1812, William was a Private in Capt. James Charlton's Company of Capt. Preston's 12th Regiment of the U.S. Infantry. His physical description was given as: height 5'8", blue eyes, brown hair, fair complexion. He was discharged on 08 Jun 1814 "on Surgeon's Certf." as unfit for service by reason of wounds or other injuries inflicted while in service.

Using the 1810, 1820, 1830, and 1840 US census records, it seems likely that William and Rachel had at least six children - four sons and two daughters.

NOTE: Other than Valentine's middle name being Chapman, the census records fitting with his and his parents' ages, and William listed as a military pensioner in Valentine's household in the 1840 census, I have not discovered any evidence to definitively prove that William and Rachel are Valentine's parents.
