Eugene I. "Gene" Rohr, age 87, of Hays, passed away after a lengthy illness Saturday, May 5, 2012 at his home in Hays. He was born July 14, 1924 in Munjor, Kansas to John P. and Anna Marie (Riedel) Rohr. He married Kathryn Doerfler on June 1, 1948 in Hays.

Gene worked for 47 years at the Hays Daily News, in various positions including Job Foreman and Mechanical Supervisor until his retirement in 1989. Gene served in World War II in the Army Air Corp Photo Reconnaissance.

Gene was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, 3rd degree Knights of Columbus St. Joseph Council 1325, and the Hays Veterans of Foreign Wars post 9076, serving as commander in 1969.

Survivors include his wife, Kathryn of the home; two sons, Stan Rohr and wife Shirley of Mountain Home, AR and Tony Rohr and wife Kathy of Mission Hills, KS; three daughters, Rachel Stecklein and husband Jude of Sylvan Grove, KS, Ruth Schumacher and husband Tim of Hays, KS and Maria Hoover and husband Mark of Olathe, KS; two brothers, Alex Rohr of Trumbull, CT and Julius Rohr and wife Lillian of Hays, KS; a sister, Marcella Ruder of Hays, KS; a brother-in-law, Ralph Engel of Hays, KS; a sister-in-law, Clarabel Rohr of Garnett, KS; sixteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Sue Rohr; two brothers, Isadore and Ignatius Rohr and two sisters, Albina Befort and Bernita Engel.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays. Burial will follow services in St. Joseph Cemetery with military honors by the Hays VFW.

Visitation will be Monday 4 PM - 8 PM and Tuesday 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM all at Brock's North Hill Chapel 2509 Vine Hays, KS. 67601.

A St. Joseph Knights of Columbus Council # 1325 rosary service will be Monday at 6:30 PM followed by a parish vigil service at 7:00 PM all at the funeral home.
