1st Lieutenant Holman perished when U.S. Army Air Corps B-24E Liberator #41-28530 experienced a fire in flight on the #2 engine, and exploded,approximately 30 miles south-east of Jacksonville, Florida. All twelve service members aboard were killed. The bomber was with the 302nd Bomb Group,356th Bomb Squadron, operating from Chatham Field, Savannah, Georgia.
