Terra Alta Man Dies Accidentally From Gun Wound. Cumberland Evening Times. Cumberland, Md. Tue., Mar. 28, 1950.
Excerpt -- Terra Alta, W.Va. -- A verdict of accidental death was returned by Preston County Coroner Frank W. Pritt, of Kingwood, in the shotgun shooting of C. Earl Whetsell, 65, of near Terra Alta. Sheriff J. H. Benson said Whetsell's body was found Saturday in a hay field about 600 feet from his farm home. The body had a shotgun wound in the left side of his chest, and a 12-gauge single barrel shotgun was found about 13 feet away. The body was on one side of the board fence and the gun on the other side. "The man had apparently been attempting to climb across the fence when the gun was accidentally discharged," Benson said. There were several broken boards in the fence to bear out this theory, he said.
He was born on May 20, 1883, a son of Elias and Ida L. (Miller) Whetsell. Surviving are his widow, Anna; one son, Woodrow, of Chapmansville; two daughters, Mrs. Belle Waugerman and Miss. Betty Whetsell, both of Terra Alta, Rt. 4; eight grandchildren; four brothers, Joseph, of Seattle, Wash., Isaac, of Warrington, Ore., Ray, of Wellsburg, and Chester, of Logan; three sisters, Mrs. Edna Phillips, of Irene, Tex., Mrs. Mary Taylor, of Logan, and Mrs. Vivian McCue, of Ferndale, Md.
