The Oklahoman, Sunday, June 16, 1985: Cathy Lynn Griffin Mainus, 31, Oklahoma City resident, passed away Jun 14, 1985. She was born Feb 8, 1954 in Vinita, daughter of James A Griffin and Barbara Howell Griffin. She lived in Pryor from 1954 to 1968. She attended Interiochen Arts Academy in Michigan her sophomore year, and played oboe in the symphony. At Northeast High School she was an honor student, band majorette and pianist for the stage band. She played in the Oklahoma Junior Symphony. After graduating in 1972, she attended Oklahoma State University.

A diabetic since age 5, Cathy never learned to give up and in 1979 was the first insulin diabetic to undergo a kidney transplant at OU Health Science Center. She later had a second transplant. She was employed as a medical transcriptionist at Oklahoma Memorial Hospital and lectured freshman medical students about her condition. Cathy's positive attitude, determination and courage have been an inspiration and challenge to everyone who knew her.

She was preceded in death by an infant son, Timothy, in 1974. Survivors include her parents; a sister, Janet Young; a nephew, Jay Young, OKC; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Services will be Monday, June 17 at Hahn-Cook Funeral Chapel at 2 pm. Memorials in Cathy's memory may be made to Nephrology Research Fund, PO Box 26901, OKC 73190.
