Lee was born to Nicholas and Mary O Buchholz in Quincy, Ill in 1878. He moved to Eagle County with his family and homesteaded on what now is known as Buchholz Mesa north of the town of Eagle. As a young man Lee served the government as a forest ranger. He married Merrie (Myrtie) Brewster and together they had had two sons and two daughters, John, Carvel, Virginia and Evelyn.

Lee and his wife had left Eagle for the west coast to be near their children hoping that a change in climate would be of benefit to his health as he had severe asthma, but after a few short weeks after arriving he passed away.
