John came to Eagle Valley with his parents in 1882. In 1898 he was married to Mary Louise Warren and had had a daughter Beulah and a son Nicholas E. His wife passed away leaving John to raise two small children. The manner in which he performed this task, difficult for a man who was the crowning point in his life. He was both father and mother to his children, devoting his life to raising them properly and giving them an education. The lives his children lived speak for the great job he performed.
He was a lover of horses and in his youth was one of the famous race riders of the Eagle Valley. He devoted his life to the livestock business raising horses and cattle and the saddle horses he raised and trained were in great demand for years. He owned and operated the Livery Stables in Eagle for over twenty years.

One of the favorite stories is one of John's early horse racing days. He was known as "Johnnie Buck" and a story told by retired Mesa County Sherriff Charley Lumley said that him and another racer Charley Weller came from Aspen to Eagle to ride in several matched races. Both were experienced racers and had fine gear and horses. The day of the race they met a skinny red head freckled face kid called Johnnie Buck and decided he was of no competition to them in the races. Johnnie Buck John Buchholz won all eleven races that day. He beat Charley on six races and beat the other racer Charley Weller on his five races. Both Charley's left Eagle County with a new found respect for the little freckled face kid.
