Sister Marcella Karlin CSA, 96, a resident of Nazareth Center, 375 Gillett Street, in Fond du Lac died at the Center on Monday, September 19, 2005.
Sister Marcella, 2nd oldest of fifteen children, was born July 29, 1909 in Catharine, KS, a daughter of Frank E. and Anna Mary Schmidt Karlin. Marcella, a 1927 graduate of Girls Catholic High in Hays, KS, entered the Congregation of St. Agnes after graduation and professed her vows on August 15, 1930. Eventually she would be one of six members of her family who joined religious life, with five joining the Congregation of St. Agnes in Fond du Lac, WI.
Sister Marcella spent half of her teaching career at St. Joseph's School in Fond du Lac, teaching there from 1927 to 1951. She spoke often and fondly of her years at St. Joe's. After teaching in elementary schools in Wisconsin and Kansas for fifty years, Sister began a new ministry serving as a volunteer at St. Anthony Hospital in Hays, Kansas for the next 12 years, retiring to Fond du Lac in 1990.
Survivors include her brother, Francis Karlin of North Las Vegas, NV; four sisters, Teckla Werth and Isabelle Linenberger both of Los Angelus, CA, Sister Anne Karlin, CSA of New York City, and Sister Lois Karlin CSA of Fond du Lac, WI; four sisters-in-law, Agnes and Alfreda Karlin, both of Hays, KS, Carol Karlin of Grinnell, KS and Vivian Karlin of Kansas City, KS.
She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews; and the members of the Congregation of St. Agnes with whom she lived and ministered.
Sister Marcella was preceded in death by seven brothers: Alvin, Benno, Marne, Cletus, Eugene, Wilfric and Rev. Paulinus Karlin O.F.M. Cap and by two sisters: Sister Mary Catherine Karlin CSA and Sister Francis Ann Karlin CSA.
Services: A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:00 AM on Saturday, September 24, 2005 at the St. Francis Home Chapel at 33 Everett St. in Fond du Lac. The Rev. Edward Sippel will preside with other priests who were former students of Sr. Marcella concelebrating. Burial will follow immediately at St. Joseph Springs Cemetery in Fond du Lac.
Visitation: Visitation will be held at Nazareth Court, 375 Gillett Street in Fond du Lac from 1:00P.M to 6:00 PM on Friday, September 23, 2005 with a prayer service at 4:00 PM
