Hays -- Benno Francis Karlin, 80, died April 10, 1996 at St. John's of Victoria Nursing Home. He was born Feb. 27, 1916 at Catherine, the son of Frank E. and Anna Schmidt Karlin.

He attended St. Catherine Grade School, Catherine, and was a 1934 graduated of St. Joseph's Military Academy, Hays. A lifetime resident of the Hays and Catherine area, he was a farmer and stockman. He was a member of St. Joseph Church and sang in the parish choir for more than 50 years, member of St. Joseph Council, 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus and Bishop Cunningham Assembly of 4th Degree K of C, was a founder of St. Joseph Credit Union, was a board member of Farmer Credit Union and served on Co-op Board of Directors, all of Hays, and was a member of National Farmer Organization.

On Nov. 11, 1941 he married Mary Schmeidler at Catherine. She survives.

Other survivors include a son, Clement, Hays; two daughters, Agnes Shtogren, Sierra Vista, Ariz., and Marilyn Tani, Denver, Colo.; four brothers, Father Paulinus, Hays, Francis, Las Vegas, Nev., Eugene, Oakley, and Wilfric, Catherine; five sister, Sister Marcella, C.S.A of Fond du Lac, Wis., Isabelle Linenberger, South Whittier, Calif., Teckla Werth and Sister Lois, CSA, both of Hays, and Sister Anne, CSA, of New York, N.Y.; and five grandchildren.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Church, Hays, with Father Paulinus Karlin presiding. Brock's North Hill Chapel [funeral details omitted]. Burial will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays.
