Frederick William Nish, Pharmacy: San Francisco
1871-1941
Professor Emeritus
With the death of Frederick William Nish, pharmacy lost one of its devoted and eminent teachers.
Professor Nish, who died on May 21, 1941, was a leading member of the faculty of the College of Pharmacy for thirty-five years. He was born on January 14, 1871, in San Bernardino, California, where he received his elementary and high school education. Later he attended the Los Angeles Teachers College. Upon graduation he returned to San Bernardino where he taught in the elementary schools for two years before matriculating in the California College of Pharmacy, which was at that time an affiliated college of the University. In 1901 Nish received the degree of Graduate in Pharmacy and, because of the high regard and esteem held for him by the faculty, he was immediately appointed an instructor in pharmacy. He was awarded the degree of Bachelor of Pharmacy in 1906. Three years later he was advanced to the rank of assistant professor and later became a full professor, serving in this capacity until 1938 when he retired.
Professor Nish was an excellent teacher. His subjects were presented in an orderly and systematic manner and were well balanced with respect to the theory and practice of pharmacy. The College of Pharmacy and teaching were his main interests and he unselfishly devoted his time and energy to the improvement of both. His kindly, pleasant manner and considerate good advice earned for him the respect of all his students and his many friends.
Nish made many contributions in the fields of educational and professional pharmacy. He was a student and great admirer of Dean William Searby, who was a leader in pharmaceutical investigation during the period when pharmacy was growing rapidly in this country. The writings of Nish give evidence of his excellent judgment and scholarly character. His dignified modesty was evident in all that he did. Not only was he interested in teaching and furthering the progress of pharmacy, but in addition, he devoted a great deal of time to pharmaceutical activities outside the laboratory and class-room. He served as secretary for the California Pharmaceutical Society from 1906-1912, and was a member of the United States Pharmacopoeia Convention in 1930. He was a member of Phi Delta Chi, and an honorary member of Sigma Kappa Theta. He also held membership in other professional organizations. He was a Past Master of Occidental Lodge No. 22, F. and A. M., of San Francisco, and had other Masonic affiliations.
He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Isabelle Poole, who resides in San Bernardino, California.

Prof. Nish held the degree of PhG.
