First born son of Harriet Elizabeth Bond and John Bird Martin. His dad died when he was about eleven years old. He grew up working on a farm, then as a young man, went to Oklahoma and Texas, working in the oil fields.

He returned to Kentucky, where he married Lula Frances Kidd on Sept. 7, 1907 in Wayne County, KY. They started their family and then moved to Texas where he became superintendent of the Wood Oil Company gasoline plant in Electra, Tx. He retired from the oil business (1934) and bought a farm in Alvord, Texas until moving his family to Palestine, Texas around 1940.

Hobbies included hunting and gardening.
