Roswell was the son of Philo and Mehitable Beardsley. He was born about 1817 in New York. Roswell married Philancy Smith on March 23, 1843, probably in Tompkins County, New York. This was one of several marriages between the Beardsley and Smith families. Roswell and Philancy lived for a time in New York, then moved to Waupun, Fond du lac County, Wisconsin. Roswell enlisted with the 4th Regiment Wisconsin Cavalry as a Private in 1861 to serve in the War of the Rebellion (Civil War) at 43 years old. He mustered out on May 28, 1866 with a rank of Corporal. Roswell died June 7, 1904. Philancy died in 1910, a widow. They are buried in Forest Mound Cemetery in Waupun.
