Rhoda was born about 1825, probably in New York. She was the daughter of Philo and Mehitable Beardsley. On February 6, 1845, she married Cortland C. Smith, probably in Tompkins County, New York. Thius was one of several marriages between the Beardsley and Smith families. After the death of her father-in-law, her husband bought the family farm and they settled there. Cortland died in 1888 and Rhoda lived until August 30, 1905. Rhoda is buried in the Hayts Cemetery on Hayts Road and Route 96, near Ithica. Their joint headstone reads: "Cortland C. Smith 1818-1888, Rhoda, wife of C. C. 1825-August 30, 1905"
