Courtland's parents, Peter Smith & Abigail Archer, moved from Orange County, New York to the wilderness of western New York in 1809 with their first child, Lucinda. Peter left his family and fought in the War of 1812. After the war, Peter returned to his family and continued to carve his homestead from the forest. Cortland was the sixth child, born on August 12, 1818.

On February 6, 1845, Courtland married Rhoda Beardsley, one of several marriages between the Beardsley and Smith families. When his father died, Courtland bought his siblings' share of the homestead to raise his family there. Cemeterys of Tompkins County, on Tompkins County Rootsweb site, says Cortland is buried with his wife in the Hayts Cemetery on Hayts Road and Route 96, near Ithica. The joint headstone reads: "Cortland C. Smith 1818-1888, Rhoda, wife of C. C. 1825-August 30, 1905"
