Jesse Ashburn, son of Dabney Anderson Ashburn, was born in North Carolina, probably Caswell county, about 1787. As a young man he removed from Knox county, Tennessee, whither he had come with his father's family before 1800, and settle in what is now Overton - then Jackson- south side of Obeds River on a creek ever since then called Ashburn Creek. On the north side of the river, lived the Lanier family recently come from Henry county, Virginia. Their land lay on both sides of the creek to which they gave their name - Lanier Creek. This is mentioned in deeds on record at Livingston, Overton county, showing their land transactions.
In 1806, Jesse's brother, Anderson Ashburn Jr., married the young daughter of Washington and Elizabeth (Hicks) Lanier. It was probably a year or two before that Jesse Ashburn married Judah's sister, "Patsy" Martha Lanier, born in Henry county, VA, 1785. For several happy years the two brothers who had married sisters lived happily side by side. The estate of Mr. Lanier was settled when he passed away. Jesse and Martha, and Anderson and Judah, along with their other adult brothers and sisters deeded their share in the Lanier land to their brother George Lanier, and the family began to scatter. Washington Lanier's two daughters, Judah and her husband Anderson Ashburn, Robert Lanier and his family, and later, "Tabby" Lanier and her husband Thomas Brown, removed to McLean county Illinois.
Jesse and "Patsy" Martha Lanier remained in Overton, in which many land transactions are recorded for Jesse. After several reverses in his fortunes, he left Overton to reside in Fortress - or perhaps the land he owned in Overton feel within the boundary of Fentress when the later county was formed from part of Overton in 1823. Most of Jesse and Patsy's descendants who remained in Tennessee continued to dwell in Fentress.
Jesse and Patsey spent their days in the lovely Cumberland Plateau area of middle Tennessee, and there they died, probably never knowing the Patsey was descended from the long line of aristocratic people which included lords, ladies, barons, kings and queens.

Family members report the Ashburn Cemetery has 6 headstones, only Martha Laneir Ashburn's stone and Jesse Ashburn's is readable. In 1975 a researcher states there are 11 additional graves. Most graves are either Ashburn or Speck ancestors.
