Mary was the first born child of Eusebius Emerson and Margaret Linnen. Her eleven siblings were Susanna "Susan" Emerson, born 1802; Eusebius Emerson Jr, born 1804; John Emerson, born 1806; Hawley Emerson, born 1809; Philena Emerson, born 1811; Joseph David Emerson, born 1814; Margaret E. Emerson, born 1816; Enoch Auburn Emerson, born 1818; Ezekiel Harry Emerson, born 1820; Ruth W. Emerson, born 1822 and Aaron Wass Emerson, born 1825.

On March 11, 1821, intentions to marry were published at Jonesboro, Maine to James Murphy of Jefferson, Maine. No marriage occurred.

Mary married (1st) Ephraim Schroim Schoppe on October 13, 1822 in Jonesboro, Maine. Ephraim and Mary had four children. Ephraim died from falling off a haystack in 1828.
