William Alexander Milligan is the son of Jacob R & Sarah Jane (Rankin) Milligan. William moved from Illinois to California in 1872. He settled first in Markleeville, Alpine Co, CA and then in Gridley and Evansville, Butte Co, CA. In 1874, William was a teamster in Gridley and in 1879 a miner in Evansville. He married Cordelia Caroline Myers on Nov 12, 1892 in Oroville, Butte Co, CA. They settled in the Evansville, Bangor area where Ernest, Viola, John, Alice and William were born. William had a wagon & team and would cart freight from Marysville to Forbestown. About 1907 the family moved to Marysville, Yuba Co, CA. For a time he and his wife operated two looms, weaving rag rugs. He also cared for a park in Marysville and was a janitor for the grade school until his retirement in 1919. He was a member of the Christian Church in Marysville.

Heart Attack Fatal to Hotel Guest, 84; Pioneer of District - A heart attack caused the of William A Milligan, 84, Saturday evening as he sat in Hotel Sutter. Milligan was a pioneer of Yuba and Sutter counties. The past 6 months of his several years residence in Sutter county had been spent at the hotel. He was affiliated with the Marysville Christian Church. Surviving are a son, William Milligan of Dixon, and two daughters, Mrs Alice Boreing of Auburn and Mrs Viola Androus of Honcut. Funeral Services are to be conducted at 11am Tuesday from the Lipp & Sullivan chapel. Interment will be in Upham cemetery near Rackerby.

Aged Man Drops Dead, Heart Fails - William A Milligan, 84 pioneer resident of Yuba & Sutter Counties dropped dead about 10 o'clock last night from a heart attack in the lobby of the Hotel Sutter, Yuba City, where he had been a resident for the past 7 or 8 months. Milligan made his home in Yuba City for many years where he had many friends who will regret to hear of his sudden death. He was a member of the Christian Church in Marysville. Surviving him is a son, William Milligan, druggist of Dixon and a Marysville High School graduate.
